Carrefour and Intermarché each gained 0.9 percentage points of market share in France last year, mainly thanks to acquisitions. Market leader E. Leclerc is holding its ground, while discounters appear to be stagnating, according to figures from NielsenIQ.

Reshuffle

With a market share of 23.5% and growth of 0.2 percentage points, E.Leclerc remains the undisputed market leader in France, but the numbers two and three are creeping closer, according to the figures for 2025. Carrefour grew to 21.8%, Intermarché to 18.1%. The number four, Coopérative U, also strengthened its position, with growth of 0.3 percentage points to 12.0%, writes LSA.

The growth of Carrefour and Intermarché is largely attributable to the integration of acquired stores. After all, there has been a reshuffle on the French market in recent years. Intermarché acquired around 250 supermarkets from the Casino group, and Carrefour completed the acquisition of Cora and Match.

Discounters failed to make an impact on the French market last year. Lidl remained stable at 9.3%, while Aldi gained 0.1 percentage points to 3.3%.
