Because Albert Heijn and Jumbo continue to increase price pressure on market leader Colruyt, Belgian supermarkets are now significantly cheaper than Dutch ones. Only in France do Belgian shoppers get even better value for money.
Less price competition in the Netherlands
For packaged consumer products, Belgian supermarkets are now 10.5% cheaper than Dutch supermarkets and 2.6% cheaper than Luxembourg supermarkets. However, they are still 8.2% more expensive than French hypermarkets and supermarkets. This is according to the new Price Barometer published by Shopperware on behalf of BABM, the Belgian association of brand manufacturers. The study compared the prices of a basket of 225 A-brands and 50 private labels at supermarkets in the border regions of Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Luxembourg in March and April.
