Although consumption of vegetarian and vegan alternatives is rising slightly in Belgium, consumption of animal products is not falling. Plant-based products remain a limited niche, according to new market figures from YouGov.
Decline in meat, growth in poultry
Awareness campaigns around the “protein shift,” the gradual transition from animal to plant-based proteins that benefits both health and the environment, are not yet leading to major changes in the consumption patterns of Belgian families. This is evident from statistics from market research agency YouGov, which compared figures from 2017 with the situation in 2025.
