On January 30, Zara will close the very first store that founder Amancio Ortega opened half a century ago on Rúa Juan Flórez in A Coruña. The building is too small for the Inditex subsidiary’s current store concept.
Test city
The store at numbers 64 and 66 on Rúa Juan Flórez opened on May 9, 1975, and has been open for more than five decades. Last year, the location was renovated in honor of the group’s 50th anniversary, but now the store is closing for good.
According to Inditex, the closure is in line with the development of Zara’s store concept. The smaller location does not fit in with the model of large stores with technological innovations of the chain, which is active in almost 200 countries.
Inditex will continue to use A Coruña as a test city for new projects and collections within the group. After the closure, Zara will open a Zacaffé in the store on Calle Compostela, a short distance away, on Saturday, January 31. This concept is already in place in other branches of the chain, including in Madrid and in major cities in China and Japan.
