Mercadona reinforces its market leadership in Spanish food retail: the chain once again gains market share and at the same time increases its customer reach, while the competition is under pressure. Buying behaviour is also noticeably changing: Spanish shoppers opt for smaller, but more grocery trips and spread their purchases over more chains.
Reach of 91 %
Mercadona recorded a market share of 27.3 % in the first eight months of the year, up 0.7 percentage points from a year earlier. The retailer sees both average spending per store visit and reach increase: the latter now stands at 91.3 %. In its home region Levante, Mercadona even sets a new record market share of 34.1 % (+ 1.9 points).
