European consumers are spending more and more money on second-hand goods. Clothing in particular is gaining popularity: in almost all major markets, fashion leads the list, well ahead of electronic appliances and household products.
Rising spending
The online market for used and returned products in Europe (or at least in the five surveyed countries) accounted for 21.6 billion euros last year. Germans spent over 6.5 billion on second-hand goods. Of that amount, 52 % was spent on clothing, small household appliances (39 %) and smartphones/tablets (35 %) followed at some distance. France was the second biggest market with 5.8 billion worth of second-hand items, head of the United Kingdom (5 billion), Italy (2.4 billion) and Spain (1.8 billion).
