French privacy watchdog Cnil is fining Shein 150 million euros for failing to comply with cookie laws. This is one of the largest penalties to date on the issue. The Chinese platform is filing an appeal.
“Colossal” penalty
That the fine was coming for the Chinese shopping app had already become known in June and was confirmed yesterday. The regulator found that Shein placed tracking cookies without users’ consent, without respecting their choice or properly informing them. The authority also previously imposed a record 325 million euros fine on Google for similar objections. According to the authority, these are the two largest penalties it has ever imposed, with the exception of a 150 million euros fine imposed on Google in 2022, also over cookies.
