MediaMarkt tests sustainable pop-up store

MediaMarkt-Saturn is opening a pop-up shop in university town of Tübingen to highlight the electronics chain’s more sustainable BetterWay offering.

Omnichannel strategy

MediaMarkt-Saturn is also working on the topic of sustainability. Like all major retailers and companies, they have to, given the upcoming Due Diligence Directive and increasing consumer expectations. MediaMarkt and sister chain Saturn have therefore created their own BetterWay logo, denoting more sustainable products.

Together with refurbishment services and products that are normally only found on its online marketplace, the electronics retailer is highlighting that BetterWay range in a pop-up store in the centre of Tübingen since 2 May. The new shop concept is also part of MediaMarkt-Saturn’s omnichannel strategy, in which the retailer wants to offer more services and increase the product range via the online marketplace.

Double test

“In line with the ‘Experience Electronics’ strategy, our new pop-up store is the ideal opportunity to show customers live and in color what we offer in terms of sustainability. At the same time, we want to gain new experience of how we can integrate the online marketplace with its products and sellers into our stores”, explains Hubert Kluske, COO MediaMarktSaturn Germany. The concept will also be launched in other German cities, foreign initiatives have not yet been communicated.

In the pop-up store, customers will find smartphones, smartwatches and e-mobility, among other products. Its own procurement service also offers the opportunity to exchange used electrical goods for gift vouchers. The devices are then refurbished or repaired and resold. Staff at the shop are also specially trained in sustainability and can also inform customers about opportunities to get involved in local sustainability projects, according to the press release.
