Supermarkets are still not doing enough to promote women’s rights and ensure fair wages for farmers and workers in their supply chains. Lidl is far ahead of other retailers in the Netherlands and Belgium, while Dirk and Carrefour bring up the rear.
Comprehensive approach is lacking
Supermarkets are well aware of the risks of abuses such as child labor and extreme poverty in their supply chains, but they are taking too few measures to address them. In the banana and cocoa supply chains, they are making efforts toward fair wages, but a comprehensive approach for all high-risk products is lacking. All supermarkets, from bottom-ranker Carrefour to frontrunner Lidl, need to take action.
