Amazon has big ambitions in physical retail, with plans to open its first “big box” store near Chicago. This move sees the tech giant venturing into the territory of renowned players such as Walmart and Target.
New store concept
In Orland Park, a suburb of Chicago, Amazon has submitted plans to build a 21,000 m² hypermarket, a completely new concept for the company. The store would offer a wide range of food, household items, basic fashion, and consumer electronics, as well as additional services and an area for picking up online orders. If the city council approves the project, work could start this year, according to local media reports.
