British supermarket giant Tesco plans to open ten new stores in Ireland – both larger supermarkets and smaller convenience stores. The expansion, which is expected to cost forty million euros, would create 400 new jobs over the next twelve months.
Towards 200 stores
The retailer’s main goal is the opening of a store in Fermoy, County Cork, later this month: that store alone is expected to account for a quarter of the new jobs. Additionally, another store will be added in Dublin.
Geoff Byrne, CEO of Tesco Ireland, says the investment underscores the importance the retailer places on its leading role in Ireland. Thanks to the expansion, Tesco would approach the milestone of 200 locations in Ireland and employ 13,500 permanent staff in the country, The Retail Bulletin reports.
Last month, Tesco reported that its sales in Ireland had increased by 5.5 % in the first quarter. The company as a whole recorded a like-for-like sales growth of 4.6% to 16.4 billion pounds.
