Major fashion brand fined 2 million for Bengali disaster

Fashion24 January, 2018

Several years after the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh, a major fashion brand’s responsibility has now been settled. The as of yet unnamed brand will need to pay a two million euro fine.

2.3 million dollar

It is unclear which brand is implicated, because the settlement forbids revealing its name. What is clear is that the brand will need to pay 2.3 million dollars (nearly 2 million euro) after it received backlash for not fixing textile factories’ safety issues in time.

According to The Guardian, two million dollars will be used to tackle issues at more than 150 textile factories and the remainder of the sum will be for the IndustriALL Global Union and UNI Global Union labour unions. These will put the money in a fund to help create better labour conditions for textile workers.

It is the second time in rapid succession that a major international fashion label settled a case related to their involvement in the abysmal labour conditions in Bangladesh. Even fewer information information is available about that first settlement than what is revealed about this settlement.
