Bangladesh has just gone through a week of intense wage protests: textile workers were demanding a pay raise. That raise is now expected to be granted, but unrest continues in some industrial areas. International fashion chains such as H&M and Zara are keeping a close eye on the situation: the production of their spring and summer collections is at stake.
More than 100 factories closed
Calm is gradually returning to the Bangladeshi garment industry. In Narayanganj, according to the industrial police, more than 95% of the factories have resumed operations. In Gazipur, too, virtually all production lines are running again. It seems the worst is behind us after days of strikes, roadblocks, and violent confrontations with the police.
