Calvin Klein and Raf Simons part ways

Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons and Calvin Klein part ways due to “artistic differences”: the American label wants to take a different approach now Simons’ decisions seem to have disappointing results.

Calvin Klein wants new direction

The rumours have finally been confirmed: after barely two years as Chief Creative Officer at Calvin Klein, the 50-year-old Belgian designer leaves the American label of the same age. According to a press statement, “both parties have amicably decided to part ways after Calvin Klein, Inc. decided on a new brand direction which differs from Simons’s creative vision.”

The decision does not come as a surprise: in a statement regarding its disappointing quarterly results, Calvin Klein’s owner PVH had already expressed its dissatisfaction with Simons’ decision to position Calvin Klein higher in the market. The company had already decided to “offer a more commercial product and marketing experience to capture the long-term opportunity for our Calvin Klein business”, a decision directly opposite to Simons’ up-market image.

No New York Fashion Week

Simons entered the fashion business to ‘Antwerp Six’ member Walter Van Beirendonck and used to have his own men’s fashion brand before switching to fashion for women. He had a seven year stint at Jil Sander and was creative director at Dior for three years.

After the departure of its Chief Creative officer, Calvin Klein feels it has no other choice than to cancel for the New York Fashion Week in February 2019.

Frasers presses Hugo Boss, but neither side gives in

Frasers Group increases its stake in Hugo Boss to 30.28%, thereby crossing the German threshold for a mandatory public offer. The British retail group is sticking to the offer of 38 euros per share, but the management of the German fashion brand still considers that too low.
