British luxury department store Harrods has confirmed that personal data in almost half a million customer records may have been compromised after a system was hacked. The retailer says its own internal systems were not breached, and that the hack occured at a third party system.
No passwords stolen
The data are said to be only “basic personal identifiers” (i.e. names and contact details). Harrods says it was alerted by the third party about the intrusion and is working closely with them and relevant authorities to manage the fallout. As the data breach is now part of a criminal investigation, Harrods could not specify which company the third party was.
