Gordon Brothers, the owner of the British discount retailer Poundland, is considering selling the chain—which still has about 600 stores—just over a year after the acquisition.
Auction process
Just over a year ago, the Polish Pepco Group sold its British subsidiary Poundland for the symbolic sum of exactly one pound to the American restructuring fund Gordon Brothers. The fund invested in a restructuring plan that involved closing more than 200 of the 825 British stores at the time.
This resulted in improved results: in January 2026, Poundland reported an EBITDA of 17.3 million pounds (approximately 20.5 million euros), an increase of 8.4 million pounds (approximately 9.8 million euros) compared to a year earlier.
However, according to Sky News, the owners are already in talks with advisors about launching an auction process for the discount chain. The decision is reportedly not yet final, but it is once again causing unrest at the company, which employs approximately 12,000 people.
