Metro Group will acquire food service and fresh food specialist Rungis Express. It hopes this acquisition will help expand its German Metro Cash & Carry food service distribution activities. The German antitrust authority, called the Bundeskartellamt, has yet to approve the acquisition though.
Logistics and service as well
Metro will not only acquire the Meckenheim-based company, with locations in Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Spain and Portugal, but also Rungis Express’ logistics and services. It will retain its own brand and independence.
Rungis Express, founded in 1978, only bought fresh food and specialties at the Rungis market in Paris, which it then sold on the German market, but that has subsequently changed throughout the years. Only a small portion of the Rungis market’s 3,000 items are now available at Rungis Express.
Rungis Express sells vegetables, fruit, salads, meat, fish and other fresh foods to more than 6,000 customers, including Michelin star awarded restaurants, hotels and specialty stores. It has more than 600 employees and managed a 130 million euro turnover in 2014.
