Colruyt launches Belgian edamame beans

Food9 September, 2025

Colruyt Group is introducing fresh Belgian edamame beans in its Lowest Prices stores. With these locally grown young soybeans – a first for the country – the retailer confirms its support for Belgian agriculture and sustainable products.

Only available for two months

Edamame, or young, unripe soybeans, are especially popular as a snack or side dish, for example with sushi. Steamed or boiled briefly, they are distinguished by their sweet taste and high nutritional value. Until now, this product was only available in frozen form, but with the introduction of fresh edamame beans, Colruyt Group is expanding its range: starting today, they are available in 200-gram portions under the Boni Plan’t sub-brand in the fresh market of Colruyt supermarkets.

The edamame beans were grown by De Aardappelhoeve from Tielt, a long-term partner of Colruyt Group. Cultivation began around mid-May, with harvesting taking place in early September. For now, the beans will be available in Colruyt stores for up to two months. In time, the retailer is considering freezing them so they are available year-round. “We first want to wait for the market reaction before we take further steps,” said Kristof Bellemans, buyer at Colruyt Group.

Locally grown edamame is a more sustainable alternative to imported products, often from China. Cultivation contributes to a healthy soil structure and is less dependent on plant protection products. Moreover, the product fits perfectly into the rise of legumes as a source of vegetable protein, according to the retailer.
