Carrefour will open its first stores in Ethiopia this year, thanks to a partnership with a local franchisee. This marks a further step in the retailer’s expansion on the African continent.
“Another milestone”
Carrefour announces a franchise and supply partnership with Queens Supermarket PLC, a subsidiary of Midroc Investment Group in Ethiopia. The conversion of the chain’s 13 existing stores will begin in the first half of 2026, and the partners expect to open another 17 stores by 2028.
“This launch in Ethiopia is another milestone in the execution of our international franchise expansion strategy, which already saw us pass the 3,000 franchised store mark in October 2025,” said Patrick Lasfargues, CEO of Carrefour International Partnership. The goal of expanding into 10 new countries through franchising is part of the Carrefour 2026 strategic plan. Last year, the retailer also launched in Ghana and Congo.
