Less coffee helps Costa Coffee get out of the red

After two years of losses, Costa Coffee is back in the black. The British coffee chain is benefiting from renovated stores and a broader beverage selection, as young customers in particular are increasingly turning to matcha, iced coffee, and decaf alternatives.

Young people drink differently

Costa’s coffee shops posted an operating profit of 20 million British pounds (about 23.6 million euros) in the year ending December 2025. A year earlier, the company had suffered an operating loss of 13.5 million pounds (15.9 million euros), following a loss of 5.8 million pounds in 2023. Revenue rose by 5% to nearly 1.3 billion pounds (1.53 billion euros).

    In a widely noted open letter, Lidl is asking the Belgian federal government to eliminate the VAT on fresh fruits and vegetables. The discount retailer has committed to passing on the full reduction to consumers, citing its own experiences in Denmark.
