Colruyt Group has wrapped up the Belgian mussel season with a harvest of more than 100 tonnes. The retailer now plans to further localize the supply chain and, starting next season, also handle processing and packaging in Nieuwpoort.
Entirely in Nieuwpoort
The company’s own Belgian Bel’Mer mussels have been available since 2 July at 260 Colruyt stores, 150 Okay stores, and about 40 Spar locations. Various coastal restaurants and bars also sold the mussels. The last remaining mussels will be available in stores until 7 October, while preparations for the 2027 season have already begun.
Colruyt Group farms the mussels at its marine farm off the coast of Nieuwpoort, but this year the group was also allocated a warehouse at the Nieuwpoort fish market. The retailer plans to use this facility for soaking, processing, and packaging going forward.
“With the warehouse, we can better organize our aquaculture activities and develop the supply chain entirely locally,” says Gunther Uyttenhove of Colruyt Group. Ultimately, the company aims to keep the entire mussel supply chain—from farming to packaging—in Belgium.
