Lactalis is acquiring the British division of its Canadian competitor Saputo for 988 million British pounds (1.16 billion euros). The deal makes Lactalis the market leader in the United Kingdom for cheddar, butter, and margarine.

Trusted brands

“Following this transaction, we will be the market leader in the UK for cheddar, butter, and margarine,” Lactalis stated in an official announcement. The transaction aligns with the French dairy giant’s strategy to further strengthen its position in the European dairy market.

The acquired division includes well-known brands such as Cathedral City and Davidstow cheddar cheeses, Wensleydale Creamery cheeses, Country Life butter, and the Clover and Utterly Butterly margarine brands. Saputo’s UK unit has 1,300 employees and generates 94% of its revenue in Great Britain.
