The Dutch car dealer group Van Mossel, with 571 branches in Europe, shut down its own IT systems last weekend after a targeted cyberattack. Thanks to this rapid response, the impact was limited.
Preventing damage
Director Eric Berkhof told ANP that an “unwanted person” hacked into the servers at around 11 p.m. on Saturday evening. To prevent hackers from “shutting down the company, locking it up, or selling stolen data,” Van Mossel decided to take the systems offline immediately. As a result of this emergency measure, customers in the Netherlands were temporarily unable to contact the company.
