The families behind Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord are reportedly holding talks to bring the two companies – which have operated independently since 1961 – back together under one holding company. This is not the first time rumours of such a merger have surfaced.
Talks have been ongoing for several weeks
After disagreements between brothers Theo and Karl Albrecht over cigarette sales, Aldi was split into two companies in 1961. The two companies, with a combined total of more than 12,000 supermarkets worldwide, may soon become one company again: according to German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche, the Heister family (owner of Aldi Süd) and the Albrecht family (owner of Aldi Nord) have been holding reunification talks for several weeks.
