The current El Niño could become the strongest in decades. The World Meteorological Organization is warning of major consequences in terms of precipitation, heat, and flooding. The food industry faces the threat of crop failures, as well as higher-priced raw materials, logistical disruptions, and new pressures on supply chains that are already (too) vulnerable.
Extreme Weather Through February
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) expects the current El Niño to continue gaining strength in the coming months. According to the organization, the probability that the weather phenomenon will persist until February 2027 is now nearly 100%. The effects could peak by the end of this year. “This exceptional El Niño calls for exceptional preparation and response,” warns WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.
