Dunkin’ (Donuts) to expand to Belgium

American doughnut chain Dunkin’ has concrete plans to expand to Belgium, but which city will get the first Belgian store is not yet sure. Current plans point to Antwerp’s Central Station area, but Brussels may yet steal first place.

Franchisepartner Roberto Fava confirms that the chain is coming to Belgium very soon, but can not say which one of Belgium’s two biggest cities will get a Dunkin’ first. Several media said Dunkin’ would take the place of bakery Van Opstal – Van Boxel, confirming months of rumours, but Fava denies Brussels could already be ruled out with certainty.

Fava, who already brought the doughnut chain to the Netherlands, told local newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws that “While it is true that we want to open our first Belgian location this year, the choice between Antwerp and Brussels has not yet been made. Therefore, we can make no definitive statements.”

Dunkin’ was founded in 1950 in Massachusetts as Dunkin’ Donuts, but removed the confection from its name in 2018 to emphasise its expansion to a wide range of beverages (mainly coffee and tea). The chain has some 12,500 locations worldwide, 22 of which are Dutch.
