The Romanian supermarket chains Mega Image and Profi, both owned by Ahold Delhaize since this year, are merging into a single legal entity. Both formulas will continue to operate under their own brand names, but the organizational structure will be integrated.
Next step after acquisition
At the beginning of this year, Ahold Delhaize completed the acquisition of supermarket chain Profi in Romania. “Romania is one of the most dynamic markets in our portfolio,” the company said at the time. Ahold Delhaize is now positioning the merger as a strategic step to leverage economies of scale and increase operational efficiency in Romania. Yet, Mega Image and Profi want to maintain their local roots.
Mircea Moga, current CEO of Mega Image Romania, sees the merger primarily as an opportunity to combine scale and proximity. “This merger offers both brands the opportunity to remain locally connected to their customers while bringing together their teams, expertise, and shared commitment to the communities,” he says. “By combining our strengths, we can offer our customers more value, support local producers more effectively, and strengthen ties in every community in which we operate.”
The merger will take effect on 31 March. Xavier Piesvaux, a former CEO of Delhaize in Belgium, who will take over the Romanian operations on 1 January, will head the new company. Together, Mega Image and Profi have approximately 2,700 stores and around 40,000 employees. The chains serve customers in more than 800 cities and municipalities across Romania.
