As part of its cost-cutting plans, Carrefour is reportedly looking to cut as many as one in eight jobs at its French headquarters. However, the retailer did not want to confirm the rumours for now.

Save 4 billion

One thousand jobs at Carrefour’s French headquarters could be under threat, a source close to the dossier told the Agefi-Dow Jones news agency. However, these would not be enforced redundancies, but so-called “non-compulsory departures”. The retailer would start negotiations with staff representatives in the coming days. A Carrefour spokeswoman only wanted to tell the news agency that the company intends to “prioritise social dialogue”.

When announcing its “Carrefour 2026” strategic plan in November, CEO Alexandre Bompard had already announced that the company would have to save as much as four billion euros between 2022 and 2026, and that it would review its organisation to do so, among other things. For that task, the retailer is calling on the consulting firm McKinsey and Alixio, a specialist in social strategy and transformation management.

Game, set, (S)Match: Colruyt buys 57 stores, redundancy procedure started for remainder

Belgian retail chains Match and Smatch are coming to an end. Having already sold their stores abroad earlier this year, they now also disappear from their home market. Colruyt Group acquires 57 stores, while closure looms over the almost thirty other stores (and supporting services).

Jumbo: “Not leaving, but expanding in Belgium”

Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has had a slower start in Belgium than expected, but that is no sign to retreat from the country. Rather, the general planning is slowed down a bit, to fifty Belgian stores by 2025.
