Aldi starts selling eBooks

Not only did German discount chain Aldi launch its own streaming service, it now also has its own eBooks catalog. Starting 20 October, German Aldi Life users can access about 1 million books and about 3,000 of those are entirely free.

Compete with Amazon

The new move pits Aldi against competitors like Amazon, although it will not be able to fight them on price because Germany has a fixed price for eBooks, just like it has for printed books.

Aldi uses its own new app for these digital books, one that can process the following formats: PDF, EPUB, DjVu, TXT and FB2. Third party books can also be downloaded to the app, aside from those bought on Amazon.

Currently, the company has no plans to launch its own e-reader, but it has a Medion tablet on sale, with the app pre-installed.
