The European Union wants to introduce digital product passports for clothing, that can substantiate environmental claims. While many manufacturers worldwide are still waiting for details, manufacturers in Bangladesh are already taking measures. This is not insignificant, as the country is the second-largest clothing exporter in the world.
Fighting greenwashing
In the near future, European consumers will be able to scan QR codes or electronic labels to view the digital product passports (DPP) of garments and verify the accuracy of green claims. The passports state what a garment is made of, how much energy, water, and chemicals were used in its production, and who was involved in each stage of production. According to an analysis by the European Parliament’s Research Service, suppliers in Bangladesh may have to introduce a first version as early as 2027.
