Swiss online supermarkets enjoyed 2011

LeShop.ch turnover: CHF 149 million (-1.3%)
Coop@home turnover: CHF 85 million (+10%)

LeShop.ch is one of the online activities of Swiss retail group Migros, also the owner of OBI and M-Travel. The concern realises 3.2% of its turnover, over half a billion euro, online. Almost a quarter of that amount, 123 million euro, is generated through LeShop. The crisis and low consumer confidence pushed the result 1.3% lower than in 2010, despite a 7%
growth in the first half of 2011.

Switzerland’s major online supermarket reported an increase in mobile orders (doubling to 11% of all online orders). The average order remained exactly the same at 235 francs (193 euro), while the number of customers grew by 30,800.

The latter is virtually the same number as LeShop’s main competitor Coop@Home, who claimed to have 30,000 new customers. The result was quite different though, as Coop’s online branch saw its turnover rise 10%. The chain stated the webshop generates only 1% of its revenue, “equal to a large supermarket” and refuses to announce any profit figures.
