Dutch non-food discounter Action has reached an enormous milestone, by opening its 2000th store in Prague. Further expansion, to a tenth country, is coming soon.

Milestone

Action was founded just under thirty years ago: in 1993 it opened a first store in Enkhuizen, in the Netherlands. Ten years later, the chain had opened its hundredth store, and its expansion has only continued to accelerate. Today, the company is active in nine countries: apart from the Netherlands, the chain also has stores in Austria, Belgium, Czechia, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and Poland. Moreover, a first store in Spain is expected to open soon.

CEO Hajir Hajji is proud to start 2022 with this milestone, for which she praises all the 65,000 Action employees in a press release. Moreover, the company has announced additional steps towards a more sustainable future: all stores should only use renewable energy by the end of 2024, and an elaboration of its sustainability initiatives should be released soon.

Will new European packaging regulations drive small brands and shops out of business?

The new European packaging regulations (PPWR) are intended to reduce waste, but they present small online stores and brands with an unexpected problem: a patchwork of national registration requirements and (disproportionate) costs. Numerous startups and small business owners are already scaling back their international sales.
