Adidas has admitted a cyberattack at an external customer service provider has caused a data breach. The sports brand is far from the only victim: it seems to be a real plague among retailers, with big names losing hundreds of millions in revenue.
Wave of attacks
The leaked data are contact details of consumers who had contacted one external customer service provider, but Adidas states no passwords or payment details were stolen. “We immediately took steps to contain the incident and launched a comprehensive investigation”, the company told Reuters. Adidas says it is in the process of contacting consumers who may have been affected.
In recent months, more major retailers have been hit by cyber attacks causing data breaches. An attack on Ahold Delhaize compromised personal data of employees of three Dutch chains. British Marks & Spencer even had to pause its e-commerce activities in April after a cyber attack. Harrods, British supermarket chain Co-Op and Dior were among those who followed. The French luxury brand admitted in May that “some data” had been accessed, but stated that no financial information had been stolen.
