No relaunch for Carpetright in the Netherlands

Carpetright will not start over in the Netherlands after its bankruptcy. The 75 Dutch stores remain closed and 350 employees lose their jobs.

Leases terminated already

More than a year ago, the Belgian branch filed for bankruptcy first: the 16 stores and webshop were closed. Subsequently, management took over the Dutch operations, which, according to the then European director Gideon Tienkamp, did have a future.

Management insisted that the company was fundamentally sound, but that recent financial investments and the introduction of a new software system had caused start-up problems. This led to delays in crucial business processes.

Nevertheless, a restart appears to be financially unfeasible. The situation is complicated by the lease agreements, some of which have already been terminated by landlords. The remaining leases will now be terminated by the judicial administrators in charge of the case.
