Ikea invests 1 billion euro for a better climate

“Positive contribution to the climate”

600 million out of that 1 billion euro will be invested into ways to generate sustainable energy, like installing solar panels on the roof of Ikea stores.  Starting in 2009, the chain has already invested 1.5 billion euro in solar and wind energy and it currently owns 313 wind mills and 700,000 solar panels. Within the next 5 years, the company aims to become a completely energy-neutral company.

“Climate change is a worldwide issue which screams for decisive measures. We want to prepare our organization for the future and to make a positive contribution to the climate. That is why we will fully go for sustainable energy through investments in solar and wind energy. We also want to help people by offering them an increasing product range with items that will help to create a better and more sustainable lifestyle at home. One of those measures is to only sell LED lights”, Ikea Group’s CEO, Peter Agnefjäll, said.

The remaining 400 million euro will be donated to the Ikea Foundation, which will use the money to invest in development aid – particularly in those areas affected by climate change. Since 2009, Ikea Foundation has helped 178 million children.
