Canadian Hudson’s Bay announced it will open new stores in another seven Dutch cities: Amersfoort, Den Bosch, Enschede, Haarlem, Leiden, The Hague and Zwolle, meaning the chain has reached agreements for ten Dutch stores in total.

First store opens next year

The company has already signed rental agreements totaling more than 140,000 sqm of floor space. The Canadians are convinced they will open their first stores in the summer of 2017, creating 2,500 jobs in the process.

The goal is to open twenty department stores in the next two years and with this announcement, it is already halfway there. The first three stores will be in Amsterdam, Breda and Tilburg, while its affiliate brand Saks OFF 5TH is also planning its first Dutch store, in Amsterdam. CEO Richard Baker hopes he “will be able to announce new stores soon, because we are still securing new locations.”

The Canadian company has been around for almost 350 years and evolved from a fur trader to a company that owns about a dozen store chains. It already became active in Belgium and Germany last year, when it acquired Galeria Kaufhof.
