With the opening last Thursday of a 1,200-square-meter supermarket in Raunheim, not far from Frankfurt in the German state of Hesse, Lidl reached the milestone of 13,000 active stores worldwide.

“A unique success story”

The retailer is celebrating this milestone with a three-day grand opening event for local residents, featuring app discounts, entertainment, and product demonstrations. The discounter, which generates 140 billion euros in revenue, operates stores in 32 countries, including more than 3,250 locations in Germany. In its home market, the strategic focus for expansion is currently on medium-sized cities and metropolitan areas.

“13,000 stores worldwide represent a unique success story, which we are continuing here in Raunheim with great dedication,” emphasizes Friedrich Fuchs, Chairman of the Executive Board of Lidl Germany. “We combine global expansion power with reliable local presence. Our ambition remains clear: we want to offer all customers everywhere a simple, modern shopping experience and top quality at the best possible price.”

“Canned fish manufacturers are omitting crucial information”

While overfishing is becoming a pressing problem, canned fish sold in Belgian and Dutch supermarkets lack sufficient transparency regarding their origin. “The fishing industry is like the Wild West,” says Bart van Olphen, founder of the Fish Tales brand.
