Revealed: Jumbo locations in Ghent and Antwerp

Food19 December, 2019

Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo is continuing its expansion in Belgium: RetailDetail has found out its locations in Ghent and Antwerp – and two more openings also planned in the Antwerp region.

Shop in port area

According to real estate broker JLL, Jumbo has signed a lease for a 3,100 sqm building in the Ghent harbour area (Vliegtuiglaan). There are no competitors in the immediate vicinity (the nearest is AD Delhaize, which is about two kilometres away), the only neighbours large non-food retailers such as Decathlon and furniture store Weba. It was already known that Jumbo would open in the Ghent region, but the company had not announced an exact location yet.

Meanwhile, the retailer is also working on expanding elsewhere. In the Antwerp district of Deurne, a supermarket building is currently being rebuilt on the Lakborslei, where Carrefour Market was until a few years ago. At the beginning of next year, the first Antwerp branch of Jumbo will open here. The Dutch chain will settle just next to an Aldi, but the crammed market area also includes Delhaize, Lidl, Carrefour Market, Alvo and Match. Albert Heijn has also recently become active in Deurne, with its largest store in Belgium.

Jumbo also has other plans for the Antwerp region next year: RetailDetail has learnt that the chain is also planning additional stores in Kontich and Lier. These are very competitive local markets: the small town of Kontich has an Albert Heijn, Colruyt, Delhaize, Aldi and Carrefour Market. In Lier, Albert Heijn, Colruyt, AD Delhaize, Aldi, Lidl, Spar and Carrefour Hyper, among others, are fighting for shoppers. However, there are no vacancies online for these two locations yet.

Supermarkets and human rights: Lidl leads the way in the Netherlands and Belgium

Supermarkets are still not doing enough to promote women’s rights and ensure fair wages for farmers and workers in their supply chains. Lidl is far ahead of other retailers in the Netherlands and Belgium, while Dirk and Carrefour bring up the rear.
