Colruyt Group pioneers hydrogen trucks

Scania has delivered two hydrogen-powered trucks to Colruyt Group. The retailer is striving for more sustainable and 100% zero-emission freight transport, in which battery-electric and hydrogen-electric vehicles play a key role.

Range of up to 800 kilometers

Colruyt Group is the first and only Belgian customer to incorporate two Scania hydrogen trucks into its daily operations, the truck manufacturer reports. This is part of the Scania Pilot Partner initiative, a collaboration platform the company launched in 2021 to drive innovation with selected customers. “By testing in real-world transport environments, we are learning what works best in practice and how we can accelerate progress,” says Tony Sandberg, Head of Scania Pilot Partner.

Although battery-electric transport is at the core of the strategy, Scania also views hydrogen as an interesting complement for specific transport applications. Thanks to the combination of battery-electric propulsion and a hydrogen fuel cell, the truck achieves a range of up to approximately 800 kilometers while operating completely emission-free.

“We aim to make our own freight transport completely emission-free by 2030, using battery-electric and hydrogen-electric vehicles,” says Lieselot Rouquart, Division Manager Transport at Colruyt Group. “By 2035, we will take the next step: our goods transport will then run entirely on green electricity and green hydrogen. This is an important step in the further expansion of our heavy-duty fleet.”
