The Carrefour Group has signed an agreement with the Eroski Group to acquire 36 of its compact hypermarkets in Spain. Carrefour will also obtain 8 shopping centers and 22 gas stations in the deal.
235,000 sqm of retail space
The hypermarkets take up 235,000 sqm of floor space and grant Carrefour instant access to 27 new cities in Spain. The acquisition fits the company's continuous multi-format, omnichannel expansion strategy.
However, the deal still needs to be approved, in part by the Spanish antitrust authority.
Carrefour entered the Spanish market in 1973 and currently has 173 hypermarkets, 126 supermarkets, 419 Carrefour Express stores, 123 gas stations and 656 travel agencies in the country. Its Spanish division currently employs more than 41,000 people.
Eroski is a Spanish supermarket chain with more than 2,400 locations all across the country, operated by more than 50,000 employees.
