Lidl starts delivering groceries in Spain

Lidl is trialling the online sale of fresh produce in Madrid, Spain. To that end, the discount chain will be collaborating with online platform Lola Market.

Testing phase in Madrid

German chain Lidl has joined Lola Market, an online shopping platform for food. That will allow customers in the Spanish capital to order the chain’s entire range of 2000 food references, including fresh products. Currently, the new service is being tested in stores in the centre of Madrid. In the long run, the idea is to expand into the entire metropolitan area of the capital, and other cities where Lola Market is present may follow in the future.

The prices of the products on the platform are the same as those in the German retailer’s physical stores. “When we promised to be the cheapest, we wanted our products to be commercialised on Lola Market at the same prices as in our stores,” says Lidl Spain’s director of e-commerce Carlos González-Vilardell. “That way, the online customer can take advantage of the same offers and promotions we have in our outlets. We hope that this collaboration will be a success and that we can expand it in the future.”

In principle, deliveries will be made on the same day: this is possible within one hour, or at a moment of the customer’s choosing. All orders have fixed delivery costs, regardless of the value or the volume of the order. To promote this new service, customers will get a discount of ten euros on their first order.

Supermarkets and human rights: Lidl leads the way in the Netherlands and Belgium

Supermarkets are still not doing enough to promote women’s rights and ensure fair wages for farmers and workers in their supply chains. Lidl is far ahead of other retailers in the Netherlands and Belgium, while Dirk and Carrefour bring up the rear.
