Shopping center Borders has just opened its doors, right near Schengen. The largest Delhaize store in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is its major attraction and should house about two dozen retailers in the near future.
Largest Delhaize in Luxembourg
Borders spans 7,000 sqm and about half of that is for Delhaize: 2,300 sqm of store space and the rest is warehouse space. In total, it is the Belgian distribution chain’s largest location. The shopping center also houses stores from hearing specialist Acuitis, hair dresser Beim Figaro, florist Florathéik, newspaper booth K-Kiosk, perfumery Milady and travel agency Emile Weber. Soon, Italian boutique Benetton, restaurant Elch Drénken and bakery chain Paul will join as well.
Ikogest and Luxembourg Capital’s project, designed by Beiler + François Architectes, cost about 30 million euro. Located next to the A13 , it employs 115 people and hopes to attract people from Luxembourg, France and Germany.
First of five new shopping centers
Borders is not the only shopping center to rise out of the ground in the Grand Duchy in the next few months and years: there are three more openings planned for this year alone. Nordstrooss (in Marnach, with 11 boutiques, a restaurant and a Cactus supermarket) opens on 27 September, Opkorn (Differdange, 27 boutiques, 5 restaurants and an Auchan) opens on 26 October. Bettembourg will get its own shopping center in November, with 12 boutiques and a Cactus.
Luxembourg City will be the center of attention in 2018 and 2019, with “Cloche d’Or” (130 boutiques and an Auchan hypermarket) and “Royal Hamilius” (16,000 sqm of store space) planned.
