The London city council has decided to ban cars in the well-known shopping street Oxford Street by 2020. The plans are part of the new London mayor Sadiq Khan’s attempt to curb the city’s air pollution.
Lower pollution
Currently, cars are not allowed in a large part of Oxford Street between 7 and 19h, but buses and taxis are still allowed. However, this will change in the future: London wants to ban cars in the area between Tottenham Court Road and the Bond Street subway station.
There will be two phases before Oxford Street is entirely car-free. At first, the eastern part (from Oxford Circus onward) will be tackled, but the goal is to finish all preparations by 2020. On an weekly average, Oxford attracts more than four million people, making it one of the British capital’s busiest streets overall.
