On Wednesday morning, the new Jumbo store at Heirbaan 270 in Dendermonde opened its doors. With this opening, the number of Jumbo stores in Belgium has reached 49, and 13 in East Flanders.
“A second home”
Dendermonde is the fifth—and, in principle, the last—store opening for Jumbo in Belgium this year. The store covers 1,200 m² and has 83 parking spaces. The supermarket is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., including holidays. This means customers can shop there 365 days a year. For father and son Eddy and Ruben Thoen, the opening marks the beginning of a shared entrepreneurial journey.
“We want our store to be a second home, not only for our customers but also for our colleagues: a place where they feel welcome and enjoy coming. Together with our team, we want to welcome everyone with a smile and focus every day on personal service, hospitality, and quality,” says entrepreneur Eddy Thoen.
Personal approach
With approximately 12,000 items, Jumbo Dendermonde offers an extensive selection of everyday groceries, with a strong focus on local products and businesses from the region. Personal service also plays an important role. For example, customers can have their favorite sandwich freshly prepared.
“It’s wonderful to see how Eddy and Ruben have been committed to creating a warm and welcoming Jumbo since the opening, with a strong focus on their customers and the local community. That personal approach and attention to the neighborhood immediately make Jumbo Dendermonde a pleasant place that perfectly embodies what Jumbo stands for: locally engaged and service-oriented,” says Anrico Maat, director of Jumbo Supermarkets Belgium.
Over the past six months, Jumbo achieved a 28% increase in sales, 14.9% of which was like-for-like growth in existing stores. “That’s a solid foundation,” said Maat in a recent interview with RetailDetail.
