Lidl Netherlands aims to significantly increase the share of organic products in the fresh food categories. By 2030, 12% of the volume of potatoes, fruits, and vegetables sold must be certified organic. For fresh liquid dairy products under its own brand, the discounter is targeting 10%.
Increasing demand for organic
The new targets are intended to give Lidl greater scale in organic food. The supermarket is deliberately focusing on categories with high sales volumes, so that a higher share of organic products will also have an impact on sales for farmers and growers. “We don’t just want to offer organic products—we want to make them a real part of the daily shopping basket,” says sustainability specialist Imre ter Hedde. “By setting goals for major categories such as produce and liquid dairy, we’re aiming for measurable impact. We offer our customers affordable organic products and provide a long-term outlook for our farmers and growers.”
