In the Netherlands, supermarket chain Jumbo reversed its downward trend in the first half of 2026, with its market share rising back above 20%. In Belgium, the chain is boasting strong like-for-like sales growth.
Jumbo outpaces the market
Jumbo’s consumer sales grew by 4% in the first half of the year to approximately 6 billion euros, the company reports. This result stands out positively against the overall market growth of 2.1% in the Netherlands. The number of customers per week rose by 3.4%, and customer satisfaction also increased. Jumbo’s NPS (Net Promoter Score), a key indicator of customer satisfaction, rose by 2.3 points to 40.7 compared to the same period a year earlier. Market share for the first half of the year stood at 20.0% and shows a positive trend reversal, as it has remained above 20% in recent months.
Belgian sales rose by 28% compared to the same period last year, of which 14.9% is attributable to comparable growth in existing stores, says Belgium Director Anrico Maat in an interview with RetailDetail. Market share grew accordingly and, in certain weeks, exceeded 2% for the first time.
Belgian customers appreciate the Jumbo concept because of its competitive prices, high-quality and locally relevant product assortment, and excellent service. This appreciation is also reflected in the most recent Belgian Summer Report by YouGov, in which customers rated Jumbo an 8.1. At the end of the first half of the year, Belgium had 47 Jumbo stores, and the 48th store opened in Mortsel, near Antwerp, at the end of August.
“Positive energy”
“Everywhere in the Netherlands and Belgium where I speak with colleagues and business owners, I notice that a positive energy is flowing through Jumbo once again and that confidence in the future has returned,” says Jesper Højer, CEO of Jumbo Supermarkets. “That is exactly what we had in mind with our refined strategy: a future in which positivity, warmth, boldness, and quality are even more visible to colleagues, customers, and suppliers. Although we presented this strategy only half a year ago, we are already seeing the first results.”
In the first half of the year, Jumbo opened ten new stores and renovated and refurbished approximately ninety existing stores, with an even greater focus on fresh produce, convenience, and a well-organized product range. New technology, including AI, is helping the retailer operate faster, smarter, and more efficiently—for example, by better managing inventory and optimizing logistics processes. In addition, Jumbo continues to focus on strategic sourcing. The resulting cost savings are directly invested in benefits for the customer, the company added.
On September 16 , Anrico Maat, director of Jumbo Belgium, will speak at RetailDetail’s Captains of Retail event in Brussels. Entrepreneur Bart Verhaeghe, the driving force behind the Broeklin retail project, will also take the stage. It is a private, invitation-only evening for C-level retailers—no open registration.
