In Lier, in Belgium, around a thousand people worked together to save 50 tons of sweet potatoes that would otherwise have been destroyed. The organization Waste Warriors organized the campaign because the tubers did not meet supermarket size standards. Previous actions have also been very well received.
Half of harvest “unfit”
Grower Bart T’Seyen had an exceptionally good growing year, but was left with an unprecedented surplus. Due to the warm summer, the sweet potatoes grew larger than normal, but supermarkets often have an upper limit of 600 grams. As a result, roughly half of the harvest proved unsellable.
