How Dia plans to open 300 supermarkets by 2029

Food11 July, 2025

Dia‘s new strategic plan is already bearing fruit: the Spanish supermarket chain aims to open 300 additional stores by 2029, of which 45 have already opened their doors last semester.

Ahead of schedule

The supermarket chain has already made significant progress with its strategic plan for 2025-2029 in the first half of this year, Distribución Actualidad reports. The retailer has increased its market share in Spain to 5 %, a rise of 0.1 percentage points. Meanwhile, the number of online orders has increased by 15 %. Dia’s online store now claims to reach 84 % of the Spanish population.

In the first six months of 2025, the chain managed to open 45 stores opened, putting it ahead of schedule to have 300 additional locations by 2029. The expansion focuses on strategic regions such as Andalusia, Aragon, Castile and León, and Catalonia.

Higher Wages

Along with raising its number of stores, Dia is also making significant investments in its logistics. A new distribution centre in the province of Seville, covering an area of 53,000 sqm and good for an investment of fifty million euros, serves 235 stores in Southwestern Spain. The opening of a similar distribution centre in León is planned for next year.

Dia has also concluded a new collective agreement with the trade unions for its 14,000 Spanish employees. This provides for wage increases between 10 and 20 % until 2028, in addition to extra initiatives regarding work-life balance and the well-being of store and warehouse staff.
