Consumer confidence in food sector falls alarmingly

European consumers have less and less confidence in key players in the food sector, such as farmers, manufacturers, retailers, restaurants or authorities. The latter are the least trusted, with the food industry a close second, according to a worrying survey by EIT Food.

Fewer sustainable choices

Only a small majority of European consumers (53 %) still trust that the food they eat is safe. However, an even smaller part (36 %) believe their food is also sustainable, while less than half (44 %) believe it is healthy. The latest EIT Food Trust Report, an annual survey than was commissioned by the European Food Innovation Community and conducted by Ipsos in August and September 2023 among 19,642 consumers in eighteen countries, makes no fun reading for the sector.
