Japanese fashion giant Uniqlo comes to Belgium

Food5 September, 2014

Conquer the world

Uniqlo (which stands for Unique Clothing Warehouse) is a Japanese fashion brand owned by Fast Retailing. That company has previously stated, on several occasions, that it wants to become the world’s largest fashion retailer, which would mean it would push Spanish Inditex aside. Currently, the chain gets more than half of its turnover from its 860 Uniqlo stores in Japan.

CEO Tadashi Yanai aims to open 20 American stores per year for the next few years, with confirmed stores in Milan, Barcelona and Berlin. Several sources now indicate that at least two stores will come to Belgium. Apparently, Fast Retailing has been on the lookout for an ideal location for three years now and has finally settled on a store location on the Meir, currently occupied by New Yorker.

Uniqlo does not replace its collections every few weeks, like most fast fashion chains, but focuses on basic items, often available in a huge number of colours. It also develops ‘smart’ textile with special characteristics like the ability to preserve body temperature.
